Do you know where the Myres/Brumfiel Cemetery is located? I will send you directions if
you need them. Please email me at cdnicols(a)netzero.net.
Not too long ago the Fayette County Cemetery Commission was sent this link:
http://ncptt.nps.gov/blog/abrasive-cleaning-of-grave-markers/. At this point we ceased
using the Nyalox brushes and drills to clean the gravestones. If you read it through, the
NCPTT does not advocate the use use of power tools and Nyalox brushes on gravestones. We
have been to four other workshops and three of those four did not use the Nyalox brushes.
One of those instructors had used them before but had stopped several years ago when he
realized that he was actually grinding away the surface of the gravestones, not cleaning
them.
It is recommended by Save-A-Grave, and the NCPTT along with many other organizations and
professionals including Jon Appell, (who's workshop we attended in Louisville, KY this
Spring) Lynette Strangstad who wrote the book "A Graveyard Preservation Primer"
(whom everyone endorses including Mr. Walters,) that the best effective and responsible
solution for a cleaning agent is D2. We dilute it slightly so it goes farther and it keeps
working to kill lichen and algae for long period of time after it is applied. It does NOT
erode the gravestones.
The Cemetery Commission is abiding by the NCPTT's statement and only uses Orvus soap
and D2 to clean the gravemarkers. We have also provided this information to our County
Commissioners so that they can make sure that any person contracted for preservation in
our county will follow proper procedures as well.
Thank you for your support! Finding different maker's marks fun and interesting.
