Karen
Lots of valuable information about the folks from Laurens SC. I have visited your library
and have seen the John Templeton log cabin. I copied a page from your "Historical
& Illustrated Atlas of Union County IN" ... page 57.
Harmony TWP, "Adam Eli, an account of whose first settlement is contained in the
sketch of Brownsville Township, removed his family from that settlement early in the year
1807, to the old Eli Pigman farm, on Eli's Creek. Here they found but a sparse
settlement, in which were John Templeton, John Manly, at Quakertown, William Cunningham,
on what is ......."
Looks like my family was there about this same time as the Templeton's. I understand
that they purchased this land from the Land Office in Cincinnati OH. Where would I find
these land purchase records, currently? I believe that this would be the SE 1/4, Sec 4,
T13N, R13E -- Jennings TWP. Looks like they sold this to Joseph Rutherford about 1830.
This may be in Fayette County, now. Some confusion about the counties due to early
formation - Union in 1821.
The Nickels, Norris, Hollingsworth, Manley's were all in that area, at least about
1807. Some of these families moved to Vermillion/Parke counties about 1825-30 and
remained there thru the 1850's.
Let me know what you can ... thanks in advance.
Eddie Manley
