A Baptist Church in Cottage Grove? That is the first I have ever heard of that!
Cottage Grove sits along two sets of railroad tracks, it is basically the only switching
area in Union County. US 27 goes through it and 99% of the homes sit along the highway.
Keffer Cemetery use to have a chuch, but I really don't think it was Baptist. Also,
people jokingly call CG "Napierville" becase most of the residents were at one
time Napiers or related to the Napiers. It also sits along the edge of what is known as
the "Nantucket" settlement. The center part of UC was settled by Quaker.
Cottage Grove has Napiers and Sanfords...these are Quaker decendents.
Keffer is the only cemetery near CG. There are a lot of Brethren buried there. The
cemetery sits in the midst of McDill land. They have been there what seems like forever.
The McDills came from Israel Twp in Preble co. and they are Scots Irish Presbyterian.....
Hey, wait, I was telling you that quite a few people in Keffer are Brethren. Ok, this
church was know as the Brethren - Dunkards or German BAPTISTS...not Baptist as we think of
Southern Baptist, but German Baptist. The history of the 4 mile chuch - Dunkards - is
being posted on the USGenweb site for Union County. Maybe they are buried at CG, but were
known as German Baptists.
I'll get to the library next week and look at the photographs of the cemetery. Who
exactly are you looking for?
