Here is some general information on the DuBois families of Union County. Others can no
doubt fill in specific details.
I'm descended from a DuBois family of Union County, and can trace my line back to the
immigrant ancestor, Louis DuBois. A multi-volume genealogy of this family was published
from 1968 to about 1983, entitled American Descendants of Chretien DuBois of Wicres,
France, by William Heidgerd. The few volumes I have do not, unfortunately, have your
William but he could be mentioned in another volume. Many libraries with large genealogy
collections have this genealogy.
There was another branch (besides mine) of the DuBois family in Union County but I have
never researched this line, so I can't give specifics, but I believe they were
descended from a Benjamin DuBois (1755-1795) who lived in Salem County, NJ, and married a
Mary Robinson. Benjamin was brother of one of my ancestors and their ancestry is traced
back to Louis DuBois, who came to the area that is now Ulster County, New York about 1660.
My guess is that your William A. is the William DuBois who is shown in the 1850 Census in
Harmony Twp, Union County, age 10 (in spite of the 2 year discrepancy in his age). That
William is in the household of Richmond DuBois and the previous household is a Benjamin b
1781 who might be William's grandfather. Perhaps the 1755 Benjamin was his great
grandfather.
