From your letter I have thought of some discrepancies, that you may
know
of (and bypassed). I don't remember if you are a person I helped
before, but I will gladly help anyway. Union County didn't exist before
1821, when it was created from 3 counties, Wayne, Franklin and Fayette.
But you may be simplifying for ease of discussion. Find a copy of
Dollarhide's book 'Map Guide to the Federal Censuses, 1790-1920. It is
in (I assume) most LDS Family centers and also any library that has a
genealogy section. If you can't, or have no time to find it, here is an
eyeball description, a line about two fifth's down from the north
parallel to the current north boundary contains the Wayne part, below
that is the Franklin portion, and a sliver about 2-4 miles wide on the
west border is the sliver that was in Fayette. The line is the
continuation of the diagonal line on the border of Dearborn county. In
1806 the area of Union county was split between Clark and Dearborn,
which are both down near the Ohio river, so you might need to know the
split. It is the same line of the Fayette split, so you are probably on
the Dearborn side. This is important because your family may be on one
of those county's tax lists, so you need to know which county. Just
like the census, the tax list is in kind of walking order, to organize
the book. I would go through the tax list in Union county from 1850
until his name is replaced by a widow or son, to prove he sold
everything. Then follow them back to the purchase date. Watch the
acreage that he pays taxes on. When the acreage goes down, he has
probably given land to a son, who will now be paying on his portion.
They didn't always record such transfers. The last sale may not have
taken everything, and if he died intestate, some times the only way to
find it in the tax lists. You don't mention his widow. Do you have her
burial place? If she died much later, she may have had an obit in the
local papers. The more recent the more likely she had one. Find
Vincent's tax list's also. If his acreage matches an increase in John's,
You have a clue as to relationship. I am guessing by "haven't found his
will yet" you mean John. Since he had sold land in 1853, he may have
distributed all of his "real" stuff and moved in with a daughter. Do you
know where all of them were in 1860? He may be buried in that county
instead. I ramble on, but I would hate for anyone to travel, then not
find what they need because of a missed clue. You might put a want ad
in the local paper (I don't know name) and contact the local
history/genealogy society to get a contact, that might give you a local
address and phone number for on the spot help. Or a relative of yours
without a computer (not on this list) who might have the information to
help you. Good luck on your visit and search. I hope I have helped.

I am still looking for any one with information on my Cromwell line from Union Co. I have
just about finished researching the deed books for Union Co.
I have found my John Cromwell buying land in 1806 also Vincent Cromwell buying land in
what appears to be a land patent in Sept of 1812. All of this in Union Co. I have found
John selling land there as late as 1853. I have not found his death date. I do know he was
72 on the 1850 census.
I have also found a recorded Last Will and Testament for Vincent in the year 1818 in
these land books.I haven't found a will yet. If anyone is researching these lines
please contact me. I will be in Union Co. Oct.10 and 11, 2001.
