Wm. DAVIS IS DEAD
Wm. Davis of Billingsville, one of the pioneers of Union Township, was called to his
eternal reward on Friday night of last week. Deceased was almost seventy-four years old
when death claimed him. He had been ailing for several months with a complication of
troubles which coupled with old age hasten his death. He was a Christian man, a good
neighbor and will be greatly missed in the community where he had always resided. A wife
and daughter, the latter the wife os Wm. Haag, are left to mourn for a loving husband a
kind parent. These have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. A very interesting
biographical sketch of the deceased was contained in the pioneer articles written by Hon.
John M. Bell, only a few weeks ago. AN obituary notice appears in another column of this
issue.
Funeral services were conducted at the late home of the deceased on Sabbath morning,
conducted by Rev. Drash of Liberty. Interment in College Corner Cemetery.
(William Davis)
IN MEMORIAM
The deceased son of Samuel and Dorcas Davis, was born on the old homestead near
Billingsville in Union Twp., Union County, Indiana July 21st 1824, died April 8th 1898,
aged 73 years, 8 months, 17 days at his home in Billingsville near the home of his child,
Mary.
He had been afflicted for several months, but his condition was not looked upon as
serious until the last few days preceding his death.
He was married to Mary Jane Evans in Mississippi in 1854. In 1857 her health having
failed to some extent, they concluded to visit his old home and spend the summer with his
parents. In August his wife died and made a request that he never return to her native
home, which he kept to the day of his death.
On January 17, 1860, he was married again to Anna Sophia Orr. To this union was born one
child, Mrs. Mary Hetty Haag, who is present today with her mother to mourn the loss of a
kind husband and indulgent father. Two brothers and one sister are also left to mourn
their loss. William Davis was a true man. He kept his Master's command: "As
much as in you ____ live in peace with all men." As regards personal habits, a total
abstainer from all intoxicants, a man of sterling as unrighteous, in all his business
relations. A zealous advocate of what he believed to be right and condemned what he
believed to be wrong.
At the age of 18 years he connected himself with the Christian Church, saying by this act
that he wished to be identified with the people as sell as to follow the teachings of the
Master. He has been faithful to the end; he has realized the rich blessings of the
Patriarch Job, "Thou shalt come to thy grave in full age like a shock of corn cometh
in his season."
May God comfort and sustain the believed friends in this their trying hour. His life was
gentle; he loved the good. There is consolation he can never suffer more; he can never
feel again the chill of death; he has shed his last tear and on his painless brow is set
the wondrous seal of everlasting peace. Yet while he cannot come back to us, we have the
assurance that if we so live, when the summons shall come to call us home, like him, we
too will be prepared. Let us lay him in the earth and from his lifeless form let violets
spring from the dreamless clay.
(Anna Sophia Orr Davis)

Mrs. Mary Hetty Haag, who with the father and husband has passed on to their reward, but

Obituary
Mary Hettie Haag, daughter of William and Anna Davis, was born in Billingsville, Union
County, January 28, 1861; died December 1, 1899, aged 38 years 10 months and 3 days.
In 1887 she was married to William Haag; to this union was born three children, Clarence,
Johnny and Sherman. The hearts of all go out in sympathy to these motherless children.
She also leave a husband and an aged mother and a host of friends to morn her loss. The
neighbors lose from their midst a woman whom they had learned to love and whose death
brings a feeling of sadness to the whole community.
About one year ago, Mary was taken sick with pneumonia from which she never fully
recovered. Her last sickness was short but painful, yet she showed a courage
that few possess. The was no fretting, murmuring or complaining but patient waiting. It
is a comfort to know that she was triumphant in death. She had given her heart to the One
"who doth all things well."
Let us remember that while we hold here today the mortal body that is to slumber in the
earth there is an element that is immortal?a soul that is indestructible and is eternal as
its author.
We consign to the grave the physical remains of our friend, for her "spirit has gone
to the one who gave it" to dwell in peace forever.
(William Haag husband of Mary)

DIED
LEVI B. DAVIS ?
At Roseburg. On May 28th 1862, after a protracted illness, Levi B. Davis
The subject of this notice lived from boyhood up to the time of his death, in and about
Roseburg, married there, and at his death, left a wife and one child, for whom, in view of
death and their limited means for support, he experienced many anxious thoughts. But in
the gloom that tormented his mind on their behalf, and his own condition in a future
world, he resorted to the Bible and the God of grace, and prayed that God, would vouchsafe
his promise to be the widow's God, and orphan protector in the case of his own dear
wife and child; and that he and they might have a happy meeting in the world beyond the
tomb ? Thus he prayed, and died leaning on Jesus who can make the dying bed feel soft as
down pillows are. L.H.
