board you iwll se a 3 November 2002 message under "Re:Nickels Family in Laurens
District" where David L. Hanna responded to my inquiry about James Nickels. I have
copied that message and reproduced it below.
I am a descendant of Mary Nickels who married James Bryson.

Dale Bryson
James Nickels (the name is sometimes recorded as Nichols) married Elizabeth Reid in
Ireland. He came to America in 1773 and was granted 100 acres on Mudlick Creek in 96
District (Laurens County) SC. In 1776 he purchased an additional 100 acres from John
O'Neal. His brothers were William, Chartus, and Nathaniel Nickels.
James Nickels joined Gen. Cunningham's Loyalist forces in 1775 and was with the
British in Savannah in 1779. By 1783 he was in Rawdon, Hants County, Nova Scotia where he
filed a claim for his Loyalist service on 18 July 1786. In 1793 he was arranging to buy
225 acres of land on Canes Creek in SC and the family moved back to Laurens County.
James Nickels and Elizabeth had the following children:

*Mary Nickels, b. 21 Mar 1790 in Nova Scotia, m. James Bryson

(Order of birth is uncertain, most if not all were born in Nova Scotia.)
In 1814 James Nickels migrated to Franklin County, Indiana and settled in an area that
would later be in Union County. He helped found the Presbyterian Church in Dunlapsville,
IN, and was a first ruling Elder. He died in 1826 in Union County and is buried in the
Presbyterian Church cemetary in Dunlapsville.
