AT THE END OF A ROPE
SQUIRE DAVIS PASSES INTO THE UNKNOWN BEYOND ABOUT 5 O'CLOCK THIS MORNING
Squire Davis. aged about 70 years, committed suicide this morning about 5 o'clock at
the home of his son, Sylvanus Davis. one and one half miles northeast of Lyon's
Station. The body was found in the barn at half past 6 o'clock, by his son who had
gone out to feed the stock, suspended by a small rope fastened to the
rounds of a ladder, lying across the beams of the building. The tips of his fingers were
still warm when he was discovered, but life was extinct, and it is supposed the
self-murder had been committed about an hour before; none of the inmates of the house
having heard him get up and go out.
This is his second attempt within a short time, the first having been made at the home of
his son-in-law, William Finch, living a few miles west of this city. In this instance he
was caught in the act of fastening the rope, in the barn, but was induced to abandon the
idea.
The old gentleman had had considerably domestic trouble of late, which is assigned the
cause of his rash act, and for the past few weeks had been very despondent and gloomy.
Some ten weeks ago, his wife applied and received a divorce from him and $550 alimony. A
short time before the Union Circuit Court sued him for a settlement of her son's
affairs, of whom he was guardian, which cost him between $800 and $1000, which financially
embarrassed him, which, together with other troubles, prayed upon his mind until he sought
relief in death.
The deceased has not been a resident of this county only about two months, he having
theretofore lived in Union County. Coroner J.D. Larimor was summoned this morning and is
holding an inquest this afternoon.
