Daniel Toomey appeared in the 1870 census in the Centre Township, P.O. Liberty, Union
County as having real estate valued at $1,500, with a daughter born in Indiana in 1865.
Daniel was in the 1860 Baltimore City census. He had a daughter born in Maryland in 1861.
His widowed mother and siblings are in the 1870 census for Zanesville, Ohio. His brother
has documented records as joining the Ohio Militia in the Spring of 1863; this information
was included in his Federal pension for Serving in the 2nd Ohio Regiment U.S. Army, he was
not given a pension for his service in the Ohio Militia because it was never part of the
United States Army. Daniel’s 1910 Baltimore census states he is a veteran of the UA (Union
Army), one of only two choices, CA being the other. No choice for State Militias. I have
found no Federal enlistment or pension records for Daniel. I think he joined this Ohio
Militia Company with his brother at the time of “John Morgan’s Raid9D. By determining
when!
he bought this land in Indiana may bring me closer to solving this mystery. Daniel’s wife
died in 1875, buried at West point Cemetery, Union County. So, Daniel was definitely in
Indiana between 1865-1875 but not before January 1 1861. He Probably was in Indiana after
August 1863 to after 1875. He was a miller; so he may have owned a mill. After his wife’s
death in 1875 he moved his family back to Baltimore. He is in the 1880 Baltimore census.
He probably sold this land after January 1, 1875 and before June 1, 1880. How can I find
the land records for Daniel’s real estate shown in his 1870 census? Any help would be
greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Bill
