The Davis Families of Union County Indiana
Union County did not exist until 1821.
When the first white settlers came from south Carolina to this region in 1803, it was known as Dearborn county, Indiana Territory. The state of Indiana would not be organized and admitted into the union until 1816.
Pioneers traveled in large groups for protection and companionship. The first settlers of the future Union County, left behind in South Carolina slavery and red clay soil. Wha they found was a fertile land covered with a pristine forest and alive with animals and game.
There was no one named DAVIS in the first group of settlers. They were known as "The Carolina Colony". It was John Templeton of Laurens District South Carolina who made that first land purchase into what would be Union County. The year was 1804.
In 1821 the majority of Union County was carved out of: Franklin County to the south; Wayne County to the north and a few sections from Fayette County along the western "Greenville Treaty Line". The eastern boundary borders the state of Ohio. This formed Union County and the boarders remained unchanged.
The first DAVIS to receive a Land Patent Grand from the United States Government was:
PETER DAVIS 19 July 1806 Range 1 Township 10 Sections 7&8
JAMES DAVIS 09 Sept 1806 Range 1 Township 10 Section 6
JAMES DAVIS 28 Nov 1814 Range 1 Township 12 NW 1/4 of Sec. 23
Although PETER DAVIS was the first DAVIS to enter land in Union County, I could find no evidence that he actually resided here.
We will begin our look at the Davis families of Union County, Indiana with James Davis and his decedents.*James Davis

Ok, here is a web address that will show you the USCE River navigation map of the mouth of the Kentucky River and the Ohio. It will show you the surrounding area. You should be able to find the Kentucky River from this.

Thanks for the info. I can find the Miami River, but can't locate the Kentucky River or Jefferson, IN, on my map. Is there a bigger town near Jefferson?
