Chris,
I am a descendant of the Orr family in Tipton County, IN. That family was
in
Switzerland County, IN before they moved into Tipton County. I do not
know
much about them. There is an article on the family that I contributed at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~intipton/orr.html. If you do not find it let me
know.
Information from my notes follow. It is much the same as found at the
intipton site. I hope that there is something that will help.
ORR Family Data
Taken from HAWKINS Family from Wilts Co., England to Tipton Co., IN &
Related Families, by Harold T. Hawkins, 1989.
*Martha (Orr) Warden (b. 19 Feb 1821 in Switzerland Co., IN; d. 24
July
1866 in Tipton Co., IN), wife of Abraham Warden, was the daughter of
Joseph
Orr (ca.b.1787 in Parish of Temore Co. of Armanueh, Ireland; d. 2
Oct1869
in
Tipton Co., IN) and Nancy Agness (McDonald) Orr (ca.b. 1791 in
Ireland; d.
2
Oct.1860 in Tipton Co.). Both are buried in the Prairieville
Cemetery,
Prairie Twp. of Tipton Co.
According to Carl Siler's History of the Orr Family, "Joseph and
Nancy
Agness (McDonald) Orr came to America for religious freedom from the
Church
of England. Their oldest and only child at that time died during the
six
weeks voyage and was buried at sea. The Orr family probably landed in New
York City or Philadelphia and came through Pennsylvania and settled in
Switzerland Co., IN near Vevay." Carl found them listed in the Switzerland
Co. census in 1820 and 1830. He says the family moved to Tipton Co. in
1843
before the land was opened for settlement.
In the 1850 Census of Tipton Co., Prairie Twp., p. 253 we find
Joseph,
Agness and daughter Susan. Other members of the family were living
nearby.
The seven children who lived are listed in the 1976 History of Tipton
Co., IN, Her Land & People, p.632. They are Jane, Eliza, Ann, Martha,
Susan,
Sally, and Robert.
The eight children of Joseph & Agness Orr:
1. Infant died at sea before 1812.
2. Jane Orr: ca.b.1812 in PA; d. 13 May 1874; bu. Prairieville Cemetery;
m.
before 1842 to Dewitt Clinton Gray, ca.b.1823 (He was 10 years
younger
than
Jane.)
3. Ann Orr: ca.b.1816 in PA, d. 8 May 1876; bu. Prairieville Cem.; m. 2
Sep
1832 Josiah Orem (1806-1894).
4. Sarah Orr: ca.b.1818 in IN; living in 1900 Census; m. before 1838
Preston
Layton (In 1900 Tipton Co. Census she was listed as Sarah Laten; she
was
not
listed in 1870 and 1880 Census of Tipton Co. In 1900 she was a widow
living
with son-in-law, Thomas Kenworthy (found no obituary for her).
*5. Martha Orr: b.19 Feb.1821 in Switzerland Co. IN; d.24 July 1866; bu.
Prairieville Cem.; m. 24 Sep l840 in Switzerland Co., IN Abraham Warden.
6. Robert Orr: ca.b.1826 in IN; d. 7 July 1894; bu. Prairieville Cem.; m.
25
Feb 1848 in Tipton Co. Jemima Franchier (1828-1925).
7. Eliza Orr: ca.b.1828 IN; d. 24 July 1898; bu. Prairieville Cem.; m. 20
Nov 1845 in Tipton Co. William H. Peters (1823-1866) (The first marriage
in
Prairie Twp., Tipton Co., IN).
8. Susan Orr: b.1833; d. 4 June 1909 in Kokomo, Howard Co., IN; bu.
Prairieville Cem.; 1st m. 25 April 1852 in Tipton Co. Smith Keel
(Divorced);
2nd m. 27 Sep 1854 in Tipton Co. Daniel W. Coons (1833-1900).
Note: Susan's first husband, Smith Keel (ca.b.1827; d.1863; buried
Liberty Cem., Tipton Co.) re-married 11 Oct.1860 in Tipton Co. Nancy
Branden. After Smith died, Nancy Branden Keel re-married 17 Jan1867 in
Tipton Co. Abraham Warden, widower of Martha Orr Warden, sister of Susan.
In the June 5 & June 7, 1909 issues of the Tipton Tribune are the
accounts of how Susan Orr Coons came despondent and committed suicide at
Kokomo (A very tragic story).
HARRISON TOWNSHIP. 403
"ROBERT ORR, son of Joseph and Agnes Orr, was born near Ve-vay, Ind.,
September 6, 1826, and was reared on the home farm until 1843, and from
eight until sixteen years of age attended the subscription schools. In
1843,
both father and son took claims of 160 acres each, in Prairie
Township,
Tipton County, and when Robert attained his ma-jority, only a few months
before the land came into market, he entered his tract at Indianapolis. By
hard work he has succeeded in clearing up his farm and has increased his
possessions to 348 acres, in Howard and Tipton Counties, some two years
ago
purchasing the place where he now lives, west of West Middleton.
February
25, 1848, he married Miss Je-mima E. Fanchier, Frank Price, the first
Clerk
of Howard County, fur-nishing the license. To this marriage eleven
children
have been born - -Louisa, Joseph F., Sarah A., Nancy C., John F.,
William
H., Jennie, Lawrence, Laura E., Julia E. and Nora E. Mr. and Mrs. Orr are
mem-bers of the New-Light Christian Church, and Mr. Orr has always taken
an
active interest in public improvements."

The brick for the Prairieville Church was burned on Robert's farm.
