Subject: IN House Bill 1540 - Birth and Death Records
I am sending this to you to get the word out about proposed legislation in
Indiana concerning Birth and Death Records. Would it be possible for you to
send this to people on your mail list or to people you know that do
genealogy in Indiana? I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Darlene Anderson

There is proposed legislation to prohibit public access to vital records for
the state of Indiana! House Bill (HB) 1540 can be read online at
http://www.in.gov/legislative/bills/2003/IN/IN1540.1.html Some of the
language in HB 1540 is:
"h. When one hundred (100) years has elapsed after the date of birth, the
records of those events in the custody of the state or local registrar shall
become available to the public....." There is much more to read concerning
HB 1540.
Have I gotten your attention yet? I sure hope so and I hope that each and
every one of us contacts our legislators about this. We've got to contact
our legistatures immediately telling them of our opposition regarding HB
1540 as genealogists and family historians.
Please read on:
In this morning's Indianapolis Star in Section B City & State on page 3,
House Bill 1540 is listed for Hearing on Wednesday morning at 10:30 from
the Public Health Committee. Our emails and phone calls to legislators will
need to start immediately with follow up letters in the mail on Monday!
Express your opposition to proposed HB 1540 adopting new privacy standards
for Indiana's public vital records!
Even if you live outside the state of Indiana you may be affected by this
HB. This applies to all of us - If we, at some point, wish to become a
member of an organization that requires us to prove our lineage and HB 1540
becomes a law we will not have access to birth or death records to do this.
Our desire to become a members of any organization that requires us to prove
our lineage may be in jeopardy! Please contact the persons that have
authored this proposed legislature. The site where you can find email
address for IN Representatives is
http://www.in.gov/cgi-bin/legislative/contact/contact.pl
We are all concerned about identity theft. The state of Indiana requires
information from us that should safeguard the issues of theft identity.
Please contact your representatives by email, phone and follow-up with a
letter.
Thank you for reading this email.
