I was hoping someone could help with a family mystery. I have an ancestor
who moved from NY to IN and supposedly married there. I'm trying to find
out more about his wife.
My ancestor Milo Nichols was born March 31, 1815 in Aurora, NY, d. April 4,
1878 in Sefton Township, IL. Milo married July 29, 1841 in Indiana, Lydia
Gibbs, b. December 28, 1822 in Perry, NY, d. unk. in IL. The family moved to
IL bet. 1851 & 1857. I'm not sure when Milo first moved to Indiana. My
library doesn't have IN census information. But family records say he
married Lydia in IN. It is possible he moved after the 1840 census but I
don't show him in NY in 1840 either.
The family is found in 1850 Census Tipton County, Indiana, Jefferson
Township, Roll 176, Page 275, Dated August 21st 1850
Milo Nichols 35, Farmer, Value RE: $400 Born: NY
Lydia, 27 Born: NY
Electra, 8 Born: IN
Lucian Chester, 6 Born: IN
Mary J., 4 Born: IN
Adelia Louisa, 1 Born: IN
Does anyone know of a Gibbs family who lived in the area around 1840?
Another researcher shows Lydia saying in a later census that her father was
from VT. Lydia was born in New York & then sometime after her birth the
family moved to Indiana. I'm not even sure Milo & Lydia married in Tipton
County. I'd like to hear from anyone who recognizes either of these
families. Milo & Lydia had several other children in Illinois: Eliza, John
Wesley, Hirman M., Genevra & Lena Leota.
Thank you.
