This is a common migration pattern. Either entire families in a community
will hear about "new land" one way or another, and they'll pack en masse
and
move, or they move in segments. I'm not sure who the first "Pendleton"
(including Randolph and Tucker counties families too because of proximity and close
relations) person or family moved to Tipton County, Indiana. No doubt a
Teter settled and picked Tetersburg of the name of the small town outside of
Tipton. My ancestors, Martin and Sally (Harman) Wolford moved to farmland a few
miles outside Tetersburg (to later become Goldsburg) in before Autumn 1846.
I can't nail it down to a date, but I do have purchases later on. (On Nov
12, 1847, Martin and Sally purchased land from Jacob Shoulders for $847. Land:
NW quarter of the NW quarter section in township 20. (40 acres) On April 20,
1848, he purchased land from the United States under the provisions for the
Sale of Public Lands (Congress 24 Apr 1820) and Settlement of the Lands
acquired by the treaty from the Miami Indians in Indiana (Act 3 Aug 1846). The
land, as written by the bill of sale, was the north half of the NE quarter
section 11 in township 20 and north range 3 east. (80 acres) (No purchase price
mentioned, just "full payment.") .)
My ancestor's brother in law, William Wimer/Wymer, walked from WV to Indiana
to find land and made a home. This was before Sep 1846, when he married
Julia Wolford.
A note however: Martin and Sally did not move directly from WV to IN. They
left WV between 1830 and lived "somewhere" in Ohio, and also a few years in
Vermilion County, Illinois, before heading back east to Tipton County.
Are there any WVers appearing in Tipton prior to 1846?
