Hi Mike,
I have my own copy of Tipton County: Her Land and People. Gretchen Kemp, Editor, Julia
McKinney, Associate Editor, Ruth Wimer, Associate Editor. Copyright 1976 by Tipton County
Historical Society, Inc. An Indiana 501(C)(3) Not for Profit Corporation. The society
address is Tipton County Heritage Center, 323 West South Street, Tipton, Indiana 46072.
In this book there is a little information on your Dr. Matthew Jones. Here is an excerpt
of that info.
In Jefferson Township, Town of Normanda.
p. 371:
"Abstracts of titles of original land owners in Jefferson Township show a majority of
the settlers came here from Johnson County, Indiana."
"Dr. Matthew Jones located on the present site of Normanda in 1847, and began
practicing medicine. The doctor came here from Gosport in Owen County. He remained in
Normanda practicing medicine until 1867."
p. 372
"The town of Normanda was laid out on Aug. 25, 1848 by Dr. Matthew M. Jones, Andrew
Evans and Ed Jackson on land belonging to them..."
"The first frame house in Jefferson Township was built in Normanda by Dr. Perry
Evans, also known as M. P. Evans, and the second home was built by William Ray."
p. 373
"The first home, the Dr. Evans home, was later bought by Dr. Matthew Jones, who used
it as a dwelling and as an office for his practice of medicine beginning June 7, 1853.
This home, too, has been weather-boarded and one would not guess that it was built in
1848. It stands on the north side of Division Road in the town of Normanda and is now
occupied by Herb and Lucy Moeller."
"The patient list of Dr. Matthew Jones contained names of original settlers:
Archibald Montgomery, Andrew Evans, Jessie Coleman, Edward Jackson, Zalmon Disbro, William
Stroup, Richard Foster, Sylvanus Bouse, William Campbell, Obediah Hawkins, Stites
Pritchard, John W. Nutter, Daniel Stevens, John Mitchell, Dan Burris, Enos Hinkle, Reuben
Loke, John Warren, Luke Warren, John Dison and Robert Campbell."
I hope this data can lead you in the right direction for your ancestral search. The book
does reinforce your Owen County connection.
I am a member of the Tipton County Historical Society but newly returned to the county.
