Thanks Russell and all others who have responded! I have recently gotten
information (thanks to another Tipton County researcher) that my
gggrandmother Mary (Polly) Hickman may have been a Native American. She
enters the family history in the mid 1800s when she and my gggrandfather
John Fox had the first of their 4 children in Tipton County. We have not
yet been able to find any marriage info if there was a marriage. It is
possible that John married her elsewhere and they traveled together to
Tipton County -- but elsewhere is a big place, so I think I'll start with
where I know they were. Russell, does the Miami tribe have any records? My
Fox line has been a frustrating brick wall for me that doesn't want to chip
at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Donna in Dallas

Miami Indians were the only tribe I believe. Division Road in Tipton County
is known as the southern border of the old reservation. Many people don't
realize that this Miami tribe is still very much alive and has yet to
receive recognition by the federal government as a valid Indian nation as
have so many tribes. If anyone is interested in the Miamis you can visit the
Crow's Nest in Peru. It's a fantastic place to purchase items and learn
about the tribe. Yes I have Miami anscestors and am proud to be a descendant
of the Miami tribe.

Donna,
My ancestors, Martin Wolford and Sally Harman, bought land in Tipton County
in 1840s they called the Miami land sale. They bought it from the US Gov't
when they lived in Illinois. Whether or not Miamis still lived in that area
of Tipton at the time, I do not know.
