Wondering if this is familar to anyone?
John WOLFORD b. 3 Jan 1837, Vermilion County, Illinois, Remarks: Farmer,
Blacksmith in CW, m. 21 Aug 1859, in Goldsmith, Tipton County, Indiana, Sarah
WILKS, b. 15 May 1840, Tipton County, Indiana, Cause of Death:stroke, d. 12
Sep 1918, Oak or Elk, Nebraska, Buried: Clay Center, Nebraska. John died 13
Jan 1911, Lincoln, Nebraska, Buried: Clay Center, Clay County, Nebraska.
John was born in Vermillion County, Ill., (possibly Danville) but grew up in
Tipton County, Indiana. He married Sarah Wilks, possibly the orphan taken in
my his older sister Julia.
John moved his family to Nebraska inthe 1870s, settling in Clay County. It
appears he had picked out the area while living in Goldsmith. From the Clay
County Land Records, Book 4,pg 148, 8 Feb 1877: J. Davis and Isabelle A.
Davis from Tipton County,Indiana convey and warrant John Wolford of Tipton
County in the state ofIndiana for sun of $2,000, Clay county, in the state of
Nebraska the S.W.quarter of section 32 in township 8 North of Range 6W. 160
acres.
Sarah: Sarah has been illusive. Her parents do not appear in any Tipton
county census and her own cesus replies state she wasborn in Tipton. (State
records were not required then.) The 1900 Nebraska census states her father
was born in Pennsylvania and her mother was born inKentucky. A newspaper
article leads to the idea she was orphaned and raised in the house of Julia
(Wolford) and William Wimer. Perhaps that is where John met her.
The few things we know is John and Sarah moved to Clay County, NE in March of
1876 to a farm East of Harvard, Nebraska. Then, they moved to a farm 3 miles
east of Clay Center. She had several children, worked on the farm, and died
of a stroke in Oak or Elk, Nebraska, inthe home of her daughter. The death
certificate was written with the usual scribble of the medicine community.
Her obituary states she was ill for several years. (Partially paralized,
maybe?)
Regards,
Diane
