J.W. Russell Victim of Heat
Spanish American War Veteran and Pioneer Carpenter Died Monday
Lived here 81 years
Tipton County suffered the loss of one of her pioneer residents Monday
evening when James W. Russell, 82 years of age died at his home, 407 South
East Street. His death is directly attributed to the heat, which aggravated
an asthmatic heart trouble from which he had suffered for several years.
The deceased during the hot spell has been troubled greatly by asthma and
Saturday of last week was able to be up town but feeling very ill. Sunday
his condition became serious and a doctor was with him a good portion of
the time. His death occurred at 5:30 Monday evening. The death of this
aged man, who had spent practically all his life in Tipton County, removes
another of the pioneer artisans. For many years he was in the carpenter
contracting work, but for the past several years had been living a retired
life. He was a Spanish-American War veteran, being a member of Company
I, 160th Indiana Volunteer regiment which saw service in Cuba. The company
was recruited in tis county in 1898 by the late George Dyer.
James W. Russell was born in Brown County, 26 Dec 1853 being one of several
children born to William and Mary (Wright) Russell, who cam here from Brown
county and settled on a farm southeast of Tipton, their home being a log
cabin formerly occupied by Brazilla Blount on what is now the J.A. Lilly
farm. The deceased was little more than one year of age when his parents
removed here. After a short residence southeast of Tipton the parents moved
to a place southwest of Tipton near the Dixon school and later purchased
80 acres, which is now the Wiggins farm. The mother died in 1898, having
been a widow since 1879. Both his parents are buried in the old section
of Fairview cemetery. Of the seven children born to William and Mary Wright
Russell, only one now survives, Mrs. George Taylor of West Madison Street.
The deceased in 1879 was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Devaney, a daughter
of Benjamin and Mary Jane (Tucker) Devaney, the ceremony being performed
by Joseph Lafeber of Atlanta and they went to housekeeping on a farm west
of Arcadia. In 1881 they removed to Goldsmith where the deceased starteda
carpenter and contracting business, which he followed until his retirement.
The union of James W. Russell and Nancy Jane Devaney resulted in seven
children being born, four of them and the wife , whose death occured October
11, 1931 preceding him to the grave. Surviving children are Carl W. Russell,
who resided with the father on South East Street, Judge Frank B. Russell
of Tipton and Mrs. Bertha (Russell) Robertson, wife of Fred T. Robertson
of Frankfort. He is also survived by six grandchildren.
During his long residence in this county James W. Russell had made many
warm friends. He was always cheerful and had a happy gretting and warm
handclasp for all. Mr. Russell had been a member of the Methodist church
for many years, member of the Masonic Lodge since 1879, member of the Moose
lodge and of the Spanish-American War veteran. His passing will be a matter
of general regret.
