A. J. DOWNS
A. J. Downs, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Battle Ground died at
8 o'clock last night at his home from neuralgia of the heart. He was born in Ohio
(Ross County), September 2, 1835, and came to Tippecanoe County when he was eight years of
age, the remainder of his life being spent here. He was a very successful farmer, a good
and honored citizen. In 1857 he was married to Mary F. Tuttle, to which union nine
children were born. The mother died February 27, 1900. In 1901 Mr. Downs was married to
Miss Sarah Wharton, of Greencastle. He was a member of the Methodist church, a Mason and
a K. of P. The wife and the following sons and daughters survive: Byron and Edward, of
Rensselaer; W. A. (William Avy) Downs and Mrs. Rachel Funk, of Lafayette; H. M. (Harry
Morton) Downs, of Rochester, Ind., and Clark B. of Riverside, Cal. The funeral
arrangements have not been made.
Note: Andrew Downs was the son of William Downs and Rachel Green. He was buried in Battle
Ground Cemetery in Battle Ground, Indiana.
