Obituary for Clara J. Martin
Lafayette Morning Journal
Feb. 7, 1911

CLARA J. FULKS
Mrs. Clara J. Fulks, wife of Alexander S. Fulks, one of the best known women in West
Lafayette, died at 11:50 o'clock yesterday morning at the family residence, 328
Salisbury street. Mrs. Fulks suffered an acute bilious attack yesterday morning after
breakfast and had a severe pain in her head. A physician was called but he was compelled
to leave the city soon after he prescribed for her. About 11 o'clock Mrs. Fulks
became unconscious and another physician was called, but heart failure had followed the
bilious attack and she died in a short time, without regaining consciousness. Her death
was entirely unexpected and was a great shock to her family and friends.
Mrs. Fulks was the former Miss Clara J. Martin and was born near Dayton, in this county,
on January 26, 1846. She was married to Mr. Fulks in 1868 and they lived at Wolcott for
some time, coming from there to West Lafayette. Mrs. Fulks leaves a husband and the
following children: Mrs. William Riehle and Miss Alta Fulks of West Lafayette, and
Marcellus C. Fulks, of Houston, Tex. Mrs. Fulks was a member of the West Side Methodist
church and her gentle Christian spirit was shown in her daily life. She was a devoted
wife and mother and was a sincere and true friend. She endeared herself to all who knew
her by her womanly qualities and no woman in the community was more sincerely loved and
admired. Her death is a source of regret to the church and to the town in which she
lived.
