This "forward" tells the tale of our neglected state historical records, stored
in a warehouse on the near-east side of Indy. The building has a sprinkler system poised
overhead. It was to be a temporary move, and you can read below about recent damage to
records.

FISA President Steve Towne asked me to forward the following message to you.
Good day to everyone,
As many of you are aware, at last month's Friends Board meeting we discussed if and
when we needed to ask Friends membership and like-minded groups to contact their
legislators to urge their support for funding a new State Archives building. Signs
indicate that now is the time we should act.
Please contact your legislators (in both chambers) to urge their support for funding a new
Archives building. Using your own words, here are some points to make in your messages:
*The General Assembly voted to fund a new State Archives building in 2015; now that the
Pence cell-tower deal that would have funded the building has been canceled, they need to
follow through by funding it in the regular budget
*Since January 1 of 2017, there already have been five (5) leaks in the current warehouse
building, including one caused by a bullet and one in the roof of a vault holding vitally
important records *Environmental conditions in the warehouse building continue to endanger
State Archives records *The more they delay, the higher the cost of building
*The State Archives building represents good government and wise management of resources;
it is not simply a bicentennial celebration project
*The State Archives building represents an opportunity to build infrastructure for
long-term benefit to the state.
Rep. Tim Brown of Tippecanoe County requires special attention. As chair of the House Ways
and Means Committee, he has an important role in creating the state budget. Persons should
contact him to urge inclusion of the State Archives building in the budget. Please ask
your Lafayette-area friends to contact Rep. Brown on this matter.
Please inform organizations and individuals who share our interest in supporting the State
Archives to contact their legislators as well. These might be genealogy groups, historical
societies, Society of Indiana Archivists, Indiana Association of Historians, librarians,
primary and secondary educators, bar associations, etc.
This web page
https://iga.in.gov/legislative/find-legislators/ will help you identify your
state legislators. Simply type in your street address to learn your representative and
senator. It also gives you links to find contact information (phone numbers; email
addresses; mailing addresses).
Personal messages to legislators are important tools. A polite and well-reasoned message
is powerful.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you!
Steve

Subject: Star Article on Funding for Bicentennial Projects
Good morning,
Yesterday's Star included an article, "Funding Elusive for Pence's
Bicentennial Project." It mentions the new State Archives building project funding
remains up in the air.
http://www.indystar.com/story/news/politics/2017/01/29/elusive-funding-pe...
It notes that the renegotiation of the cell-tower deal is "uncertain" and the
governor is "reviewing" it.
It notes that Gov. Holcomb initially proposed funding the Bicentennial projects with
tobacco settlement funds, but met with resistance. He is now, the article says, aiming to
fund the projects, including the State Archives building, from the general fund.
Thank you.
Steve
