Deb and Lou Ann,
At the library again...they're probably tired of seeing me there. I found something
that's terribly confusing. I was trying to get an obit for John, whose dod is given
as 2-27-22. Well, there is something in the paper that day about his will having been
probated and read, but he didn't die that day. I looked in another place that said he
died 2-22-22 (really). The obit on that day is for John Bernhardt, but with different
parents. Here it is:
John Bernhardt, for many years a widely known citizen of Lafayette, died at 6 o'clock
Tuesday evening at St. Elizabeth hospital. He had been in poor health since Christmas and
had been at the hospital for four weeks. Death was caused by a complicatio of diseases.
Mr. Bernhardt was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Bernhardt, both deceased, and was born in
Lafayette in 1859. He was engaged in railroading in his younger days, and served for a
time as a conductor on the Monon railroad. He retired in 1894 and had not worked since
that time. One daughter, Mr. John H. Miller, survives.
The body was taken to the Frank and Sons undertaking parlors to be prepared for burial.
Services will be conducted from the undertaking parlors at 2 o'clock Thursday
afternoon.
See what I mean? There was a Jacob Bernhardt living in Lafayette at that time. I'm
getting a headache again...
That other thing I did was to go through all the city directories that the library had
from 1863 (the earliest) to 1895. I listed every place I could see them living, and
everyone who was living with them. No big surprises. They sold the Wabash Valley House
(which was opposite the Wabash Valley depot on Ferry St.)a couple of years after the first
Frank died in 1873. It was bought by a Jacob Neubauer. At first they moved to 28 Perrin
Ave. and later to 26 Perrin. Fred was the proprietor of the New Pacific Hotel at 208
Ferry for a little while. I think he later called it the Bernhardt Hotel and Saloon.
Bernice, Barbara's grand daughter mentioned in the 1910 census was the daughter of
Frank and Leona (Sims) Bernhardt.
