Becky and Lou Ann,
Thanks for the good work on John. I wrote a really long response but lost the window
before I hit send, and it's probably all for the best.
Bottom line is, I think the paper got the "Jacob" part wrong, or else Frank J
was Frank Jacob. (I had always guessed Franz Josef, but never have I had any data, so it
could be anything.) But I have a lot of census and city directory info for John, and his
marriage, and Clara's obituary that you found, and I'm pretty sure the obituary is
him. It matches so well.
And I find it really compelling that I never saw more than one John Bernhardt in the
Lafayette City Directory (I found some online), did you?
Barbara's granddaughter Bernice, though, is not Frank and Leona's daughter
Bernice. Frank Yeager Bernhardt and Leona Rose Sims's daughter was my Aunt Bea, and
she was not born until 1918. (I have census and other data on her dob, so I am pretty
sure.) I think that the Bernice living with Barbara in 1910 must have been a daughter of
Frank J (jr.) and Johnanna Yeager.
I'm still trying to come to a good guess for Eva and Frederica -- I'm going to go
back to any records and see if I can find them both at the same time. And I will try to
get a timeline for Jacob, too. But I do think that the John Bernhardt in your obituary is
my John, not Jacob's.
Thanks so much for your research on this puzzle. It is fun to have someone to work with.
I have a few conversations going from other posts I have made, and I appreciate all the
generosity. Not to mention the people who maintain the findagrave and similar sites.
Regards,
Deb
oh, and 2-22-22 sounds like a lucky day, but I guess it was not, for John...
