Becky and Lou Ann,
The plot thickens. 1881 is right after Eva was living with Barbara per the 1880 census.
The census does not give address, but Barbara was at 26 Perrin in the same City directory,
and one in 1894, so I think the Bernhardt House was her home, where she took in boarders.
So it really looks like Eva and Ricky and Frederica were the same person.
I think "Frederick Hoffman" is her, too. I saw him in 1870 living with Frank
and Barbara Bernhardt (probably at the Wabash Valley House), but I think, peering at the
census image, that he was a she, and his name was Frederica. Supporting this is the
occupation "at home," which seems to mean female or child. (I had previously
been guessing that Frederick married Eva.)
So maybe Frederica/Frederick/Rickey/Eva
lived at Wabash Valley House 1870 ("Frederick" dob ~1814, Bavaria)
lived at 26 Perrin 1880 (Eva, dob ~1808, Bavaria)
lived at 26 Perrin, 1881 (Mrs. Frederica Hoffmann)
died 4 Mar 1887 in Lafayette (dob ~1804 or 1811, Germany)
But, no, the remaining puzzle is that Eva is recorded as "aunt" clear as day in
the 1880 census., and there is that aunt grave marker... I really don't think that
Frank's mother is buried under the aunt stone.
Now, if she were _Barbara's_ mother, she could be Frank's aunt -- people seemed to
stick to family for picking mates -- and then I would know Barbara's maiden name.
Barbara always says she came from Bavaria, and Frank always says Wurttemberg -- mystery
woman says Bavaria. And Frank had died by 1887, so maybe Barbara was the plotholder.
The other guess would be that there were two women who lived with the Bernhardts, and that
Rickey/Frederica/Frederick (1811-1887)
was Frank's mother and
buried in Frank's plot
died Mar 4, 1887 by the record book (born 1811 by the record, book, too, if I am reading
the findagrave right.)
"Frederick" was born in 1814 per the 1870 census, but that is way too late for
Frank's mother.
Eva (1804-1887)
was her sister/sister-in-law/?? and is
also buried in Frank's plot,
under the "aunt" stone
died 1887 by the stone
born 1804 by the stone and 1808 by the 1880 census.
Thanks for finding the obituary for Clara Weiss Bernhardt. She was Mrs. John, btw, not
Mrs. Frank. Mrs. Frank was Johnanna Yeager, from Attica, Indiana. (I just love that
name.)
This is so much fun for me, a new piece of puzzle every day or two. I could guess on this
all day. Thanks for helping.
Lou Ann, do you know if the note on the findagrave that says Rickey died at 76 comes from
the same record that says she died in 1887 and was the plotholder's mother? 76 at her
death would mean she was born in 1811, but "Aunt" was born in 1804.
