RE: 1850 CENSUS --SHEFFIELD TWP. TIP. CO.IN. LIST:
Dryer, MARGARET AGE 57 PROPERTY VAL: 2500 B: KY.
This is Margaret Gregory, widow of Edward M. Dryer
DAVID 30
WM. 34/FARMER
ANDREW 22/FARMER
HIRAM 20/FARMER
EDWARD 15
The rest of the people are her sons. I believe these are all in the same household 1850.
She and Edward also had a daughter Mary 1821-39. Margaret Dryer owned a farm on the west
edge of Dayton, marked on the 1878 atlas.
1860 CENSUS (SAME PLACE) LIST:D=DAYTON
JOHN 481 D
DAVID 481 D
MARGARET "GUEST" 481D
SARAH 481D
WHEELER 481 D
Here Margaret appears as "Guest." She died in 1878 and is buried in Dayton
cemetery. Her name is on the stone for her brother, David H. Gregory and his wife Mariah.
David H. Gregory was one of the founders of the town of Dayton. The list above is from an
index. Here is the entry:
Dryer, David, 40, OH, farmer (head of household)
Margaret, 65, KY, guest
Wheeler, 24, IN, farmer
Sarah, 17, IN domestic
John, 14, IN
Other heads of household in 1860
Dryer, Allen p. 469
Andrew, p. 506--
Hiram H. p. 502
Lewis p. 475 (in Dayton)
William M., p. 481 (in Dayton)
It appears the above John, age 14 in 1860, is the right age to be your John A., but I
can't verify that at the moment, and I don't know whose son he is. I only have two
daughters for David Dryer: Susan and Nona. My notes are too confused. I will have to get
back to you.
Susan
