(Lafayette, Indiana, Dailey Courier, Thursday, January 14, 1909, page3) -- The funeral of
the late Louis Hoffman, who died Wednesday evening at his home, State Street and Chauncey
avenue, was held this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the family residence and the obsequies
were largely attended. Rev Herman Gelsen, pastor of the German M. E. church., in an
impressive and earnest manner, paid a glowing tribute to the memory of the deceased. The
floral offerings were many and beautiful. During the service several vocal numbers were
sweetly rendered by Herman Kalberer. The following, who have known Mr Hoffman for years,
acted as pall-bearers: Jacob Hauck, Charles Neumann, Robert Moorman, Elias Bryant, Henry
Ford, and John Moore. Mr Hoffman was one of the West Side’s best known citizens and for
nearly forty years watched the growth and development of the town with pride. He was
always interested in its welfare and his public life has been a useful one. He was born !
in Reilinghausen, Germany, and was 78 years old. For thirty-eight years he lived in the
house where he died. His marriage to Miss Sophia Kadel took place at Terre Haute in 1855
and the union was a happy one. Quiet of demeanor, never forward or presumptuous, he made
friends by the score and always maintained their friendship. A life-long republican he
showed keen personal pride in voting. Despite his gradual decline he always had a kind
word and smile for those with whom he came in contact. Mr Hoffman enlisted in the Union
Army August 15, 1862, and served three years, receiving an honorable discharge. As a
fitting tribute the Women’s Relief Corps of the G. A. R. held a flag service over his
remains at 10 o’clock this morning and the Loyal Legion gave him a military burial in
Springvale cemetery.
