WIDOW, FOR 86 YEARS RESIDENT OF COUNTY, DIES
Mrs. Mary Ellen Erwin, Daughter of Pioneer Settlers, Dies of Injuries Received Year Ago.
Mrs. Mary Ellen Erwin, widow of William Erwin, died at 10:30 o’clock Thursday morning
at the home of her daughter Mrs. Smith W. Butler, 501 New York street. Death followed an
illness dating from February 6, 1924; when she fell and fractured a hip. She was a patient
at the Home hospital for two months and since that time had been confined to the home of
here daughter. A short time ago she suffered a paralytic stroke and hemorrhages developed,
causing death. During her long illness she was a patient sufferer and exemplified rare
Christian fortitude,
Mrs. Erwin was the daughter of James and Nancy Jorden and was born 86 years ago on the
border of the Grand Prairie in the old Jorden homestead, near Montmorenci, and her entire
life was spent in this county. On September 13, 1857, she was united in marriage to
William Erwin. Four sons and five daughters were born to the union. The husband, two sons
and two daughters preceded her in death.
Surviving are the following children: James C. Erwin, William H. Erwin Jr., Mrs. John
M. Golden, Mrs. William E. Golden and Mrs. Smith W. Butler. She is also survived by 18
grandchildren and 17 great-grand children
Mrs. Erwin was a member of the United Brethren church at Weaver Chapel for many years
and was a true Christian woman. She was a devoted wife and mother and was honored and
revered by all who knew her.
Short funeral services will be conducted at the Butler hone, 501 New York street, a 1
o’clock Saturday afternoon. Funeral service will be in the Weaver Chapel at Number Ten at
2 o’clock. Rev. Smith, of Montmorenci will officiate.
