I'm glad you are enjoying the Dayton (Indiana) items I am posting. I am
looking for information on the graduating classes of Dayton schools,
especially high school graduations, from the turn of the century. I have the
book the alumni association put out, but I know that the names for these
years are just those turned in when they started the alumni association
about 1960. They aren't drawn from any official records. I was hoping the
classes would be listed in the papers.
I am finding that it is hard to separate common school or 8th grade
graduations from high school graduations. Does any one know more about the
high school examination at the turn of the century? Dayton only added high
school classes slowly, first two years, then three years, and finally four
years. Was it possible to do personal study and take this examination, even
if the local school didn't offer the classes? Or did you have to commute to
a school that offered the classes? I know that after the interurban was put
in, students did commute in to Lafayette to school.
