Well I just can't leave a good detective story alone. Regarding
the
Maloneys :
WPA Marriage Index (Tippecanoe Co, Book C-19, p 348 )Thomas J Maloney md
Annie Mittering, 5 Nov 1890.
Following the incident, Mr. Maloney did not leave town, as stated in the
news article (original posting reprinted after research notes below)

Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania
WPA Deaths, (from City Health Dept Bk CH-9L, p 61) Anna Maloney died,
Lafayette City, 19 Oct 1913, age 47 years, white, female.
I don?t find Thomas in Tippecanoe Co in the 1920 census, but I did find a
Thomas Maloney, age 55 (hard to read, but index says born abt 1866), as an
inmate of the State Hospital for the Insane at Indianapolis. (Roll
T625-456, p 165B) (ED 264 image 6 on
ancestry.com)
WPA Marriage Index (Tippecanoe Co, M42-p480), Thomas J Maloney md Eva O
Moody, 10 Apr 1928.
1930 IN Tippecanoe Co, Fairfield twp, City of Lafayette, 3rd ward (Roll
630) (ED 5-image 29 on
ancestry.com)
1530 12th Street
Maloney, Thomas J, Head, Owns, 4000, m, w, 63, md at 61, Indiana, Northern
Ireland, Northern Ireland, (can?t read the occupation, but next section
says Logansport, I think).
Eva, wife, f, w, 45, md at 43, Indiana, Indiana, Indiana
Moddy, Blanche, sister in law, 39, single, Indiana
SSDI has Eva Maloney, b 3 Feb 1885, d Jul 1973; and Blanche Moody b 14 Jan
1891, d 15 Sep 1968, Lafayette.
Now that my curiosity is thoroughly piqued, it sure would be nice to find
out if Mrs Anna Malone's death in 1913 was the result of foul play and if
Mr Malone was sent to Indianapolis following a trial?
