Attica (Indiana) LEDGER-TRIBUNE (July 21, 1936) -
"Funeral services for ELWOOD MORTON EARL, who died at his home on a dairy farm at
Sellersburg IN 13 miles north of Jeffersonville July 16, 1936, were held at The Elms, the
home of his brother ELIJAH J. EARL and three sisters, the Misses EARL, at 1 pm Sunday
where, lacking 13 days, he was born 74 years ago. The body, accompanied by his only
child, HENRY BENJAMIN EARL, his daughter in law, her sister KATHERINE McCASLAND of
Jeffersonville IN, and Miss KATE EARL who had been with her brother ten days, was brought
to The Elms Saturday evening; funeral services were conducted by Rev. Peter McEwen of
Williamsport, IN in lieu of Mr. EARL's own pastor, who was seriously ill. Noel Brown,
a son of an old neighbor, sang at the services.
"ELWOOD MORTON EARL was the fifth child and second son of ELIJAH and SALOME
CATHERINE CROUSE EARL, one of a family of 16 children, seven of whom survive his death,
the third death amongst them in 1936.
"He was reared at The Elms, schooled in the common schools, and married 27 Feb.
1889, IDA MARLATT, daughter of BENJAMIN and ELIZABETH WAGNER MARLATT, who died 4 Oct.
1934. They established their first home at Wyandotte, southeast of Lafayette (IN), on a
farm owned by ELWOOD EARL and his brother QUINCY A. EARL, there he joined the Dayton IN
Presbyterian Church. He left this place to operate the estate of his widowed aunt Mrs.
HENRY EARL, three miles from Lafayette. From there they went to Daytona (FL) for a year
or two, then invested, in 1913, in the farm at Sellersburg where they died. He was well
known socially and industrially in many places and though he only returned briefly to his
birthplace in the 47 years since his marriage, many people came to attend his funeral.
"Besides his own family were his brothers: QUINCY A. EARL, ELIJAH J. EARL, Attica;
HERMAN EARL of Piqua OH; JAMES G. EARL of Clinton IA; and three sisters: GRACE, LINDA and
KATE of The Elms; and a number of nieces and nephews.
"His pallbearers were five of his nephews: THOMAS MEIGS EARL of Laketon IN; HOMER
QUINCY EARL of South Bend IN; CARROLL CORWIN EARL of Chillicothe OH; ARTHUR CLAUD EARL of
Sidney OH; EARL BASS of Armstrong IL; FRED BASS of Tuscola IL and ERCIL MARLATT, a nephew
of IDA MARLATT EARL of Newtown IN. Interment was in Beulah Cemetery beside his
father".
