Rev. GEORGE D. GROSS: Born in Lancaster county, Pa., Oct. 4, 1840, was a son of GEORGE
and HANNAH (HOLLIS) GROSS, long ago deceased. LIZZIE A. MARSHALL, whom he married April
21, 1866, in Westchester, Pa., was born in Batavia, 0., June 1, 1845. Her father, JOSEPH
MARSHALL is still living, but her mother, REBECCA (LEEDS) has passed away. Of this union
was born: HARRY F. dec., JOSEPH M. dec., CORA M., FRANKLIN F. dec., EUGENE F. dec., MABLE
B., ABBIE L. dec., and LUTHER M. dec. Comrade GROSS was a wheelwright and was 21 years old
when he enlisted at Harrisburg, Pa., May 10, 1861, as a private in Co. C, 16th Pa. V. I.,
and in due time was made Q. M. Sergt. His term expiring, he was honorably discharged
August, 1861, at Harrisburg, Pa., and re-enlisted at Philadelphia, Pa., Feb. 4, 1862, in
Co. B, 11th Pa. V. Cav. In the spring of 1864 he was captured near Petersburg, was held a
few hours and succeeded in making his escape. June, 1864, he was ill about twelve days
and was care!
d for in field hospital at Suffolk, Va. He fought at Yorktown, Williamsburg, Malvern
Hill, Peninsular Campaign, Stoneman's Raid, Siege of Suffolk, Deserted House;
Franklin, Drury's Bluff, Petersburg, Johnson's Farm, Cold Harbor, South Anna
River; Weldon R. R., Deep Bottom and several others; he was finally honorably discharged
Feb. 3, 1865, at Varina, Va. His brother, JACOB served in a Pa. Regt. and died in
service. Comrade GROSS is P. C. of DeSota Post, 564, he is a clergyman in the Lutheran
church and his address is Colburn, Ind.
