JOHN E. GANT: Is a son of WILLIAM and SUSAN (MCFARLAND) GANT, both deceased, and was born
in Tippecanoe county, Ind., July 21, 1845; he was wedded in Frankfort, Ind., Aug. 27,
1868, to ELIZABETH TANKERSLEY and the result of this union is two children: JOSEPH E. and
FRANCIS M., the latter being deceased. His wife was born in Rockingham county, Va., Aug.
14, 1850; her father, WILLIAM TANKERSLEY has passed away but her mother, SUSAN (STANTON)
is still spared. Comrade GANT was following his occupation as a blacksmith and was
residing in Tippecanoe county, Ind., at the beginning of the war; he enlisted November,
1863, at LaFayette, Ind., when 18 years old as a private in Co. M, 11th Ind. V. Cav. He
took active part in the battle of Nashville; the remainder of his service consisted of
detailed service and some skirmishing. April, 1864, he was injured while driving a team of
six mules from Nashville to Huntsville, Ala., the mules having run away and he was dragged
two hundred yards!
, January, 1865, while acting in the capacity of dispatch bearer from Louisville to a
fort on the Tennessee river, he was taken prisoner but made his escape a few hours later;
he was honorably discharged August, 1865, at Indianapolis, Ind. He had previously enlisted
in the fall of 1861 in 11th Ind. V. I., but was not mustered in on account of his youth;
he had two brothers in the volunteer service, HENRY in 86th Ind. V. I., was wounded at the
battle of Stone River in right hand, and EZEKIEL in 86th Ind. V. I. Comrade GANT is a
member of Carroll Post, and he resides in Conroe, Ind., where he is following his trade as
a blacksmith.
