Hi Alma,
It continues to be a small world which is nice. To answer your question about whether I
ever pursued William Snider's will. No, I have not. It really has not been on the
front burner with me as I spend a lot of my genealogy time pursuing Jones as that was my
maiden name. One can go crazy pursuing Jones quite quickly.
SO I would take breaks and go after other parts of my or my husband's family. I now
think I need to go after his will as who his actual children are is now getting to be very
interesting. My cousin from Pike Cty. and I are already related thru the Hulls on my
mother's side and some Neelys on my father's side. Now I am trying to convince him
we are also all the same Sniders, too. They all lived in Ross County, Ohio with the Hulls,
then came to Pike County,Illinois nearly at the same time. So the odds are pretty good.
Two of the Snider girls got married on the same day, and when one of these died another
Snider girl married the widower.
Your John did buy land in Tippecanoe Township in 1832 and it is listed on the Tippecanoe
Cty website. Maybe he sold it before he died or one of the other Sniders took it over. If
one was ever up to it , we could try to find out how close together his land and James
Snider's land was. I don't know if you have seen the Bio on William Snider's
grandson, so I will put some of the key parts into this message:
ROSS COUNTY BIOGRAPHIES
Martin Snyder
"Martin L. Snyder, a man of enterprise and public spirit, is a worthy representative
of one of Tippecanoe Countuys pioneer families, his father, JAMES SNYDER, settling in the
forest of Tippecanoe Township as early as 1833. James Snyder was born in Loudoun County
VA 11 MAR 1805, a son of WILLIAM and SARAH (BACKUS) SNYDER. When he was three years old
his parents removed to Ross County OH, where he was reared, and where the father, William
Snyder died. He (William) was a tanner by occupation. His wife died later in Illinois.
William Snyder and wife were the parents of nine children, five sons and four daughters
who grew to maturity and had families of their own.
James Snyder learned the trade of a carpenter and became a superior workman. He married in
Ohio Miss ELEANOR BLAINE, a 2nd cousin of Honorable James G.Blaine, and soon after his
marriage immigrated to Tippecanoe County, the date of his settlement being in November
1833. He then entered 160 acres of Government land on section 14 and 15,Tippecanoe
Township, and subsequently enter more land, and also purchased a tract of forty acres
adjoining his 160 acres tract, making a farm of 200 acres. He became well and favorably
known throughout the township, where he made his home until his death. He was a typical
pioneer, and a man of great industry........ He died 12 SEP 1878, his wife surviving him
but two months."
Then it goes on to tell about James' son Martin. I have to go back and look at the
censuses again but some of the other Tippecanoe Sniders were also carpenters, I believe.
There is only on Snider in Concord Township , Ross County early on--His name is Henry. He
may have sons named Henry, Jacob and perhaps William as William is supposed to be in that
place but does not show up in a census until 1820. Or maybe this Henry is Henry the
brother, not the father.Jacob got married to a Mary Caylor in Loudon Cty. VA..Henry, Jacob
and our William are all having kids named John about 1800. Just speculation so far.Hum
