JAMES H. MOORE: Is a native of Pike Co., Ohio, born June 7, 1836. He was a son of the
late WILLIAM and MARY (COMBESS) MOORE, both deceased. His wife, whom he married March 24,
185r, in LaFayette, Ind., and who was born in Tippecanoe Co. Mar. 2, 1838, is SARAH C.
JOHNSON, daughter of RANSOM L. and POLLY (CALKINS) JOHNSON, both of whom have gone to
their reward. To this marriage, were given the following children: IDA A., IRA L., RANSOM
I., MARY L., LURA C., JAMES B., IRVIN C. and WILLIE B. Comrade MOORE was a farmer by
occupation and was 26 years old when he entered the military service., Aug. 2, 1862, at
Stockwell, Ind. He entered the ranks of Co. I, 86th Ind. V. I., 3d Brig., 3d Div., 4th A.
C., as musician. In November, 1862, he contracted varicose veins, was also stricken with
typhoid fever and lost his left eye in action. In consequence he was held in hospital at
Bowling Green, Ky. six weeks, Cincinnati, O., three weeks and at Camp Dennison, O., for
three months. He was!
furloughed from Indianapolis, Ind., for thirty days and returned to same place at end of
time. June 1, 1863, he was transferred at Indianapolis, Ind., to 17th V. R. C., and spent
the remainder of his service guarding prisoners at Indianapolis, Ind. He took part in the
engagement at Perryville and numerous skirmishes and minor engagements. He was honorably
discharged June, 1865, at Indianapolis, Indiana, and was mustered out July 7, 1865, at
that place. His brother, LEMUEL served in 106th Ill. V. I., and died at Pine Bluffs, Ark.,
during service; his wife's brother, RUSSELL served in Co. B, 17th Ind. V. I. His
father, WM. MOORE fought in the War of 1812. Comrade MOORE is a charter member of Geo.
Wright Post, he is a disabled soldier and his address is Clarks Hill, Indiana.
