GOLDEN WEDDING
Robert Steen and Wife Celebrate Fiftieth Anniversary
ROBERT W. STEEN and wife, of Battle Ground, celebrated their fiftieth
wedding anniversary Monday at their home. At noon hour relatives and
friends of the aged couple gathered with well-filled baskets, captured the
hospitable home and made the occasion ring with merriment and good will.
When the party sat down to the sumptuous dinner the doxology was sung and
Rev. H.W. STEEN, of Oxford, led in prayer.
During the dinner hours the STEEN orchestra rendered music, NEWTON MORGAN
gave several comic songs and ROBERT STEEN rendered a number of selections on
the old family violin that had rendered such jolly music in the days when
the older ones present had tripped the light fantastic toe to the gay
strains of quadrills [sic] and other dances of "ye olden times." ALBERT A.
JONES, representing the friends and relatives present, presented each of the
old couple with a pair of handsome golden spectacles. In presenting the
gifts MR. JONES made remarks appropriate to the occasion.
In the evening a number of their younger friends called and extended
congratulations and for a couple of hours enjoyed dancing.
ROBERT WRIGHT STEEN was born January 25, 1835, near Dayton, in this county,
and his wife, LUCINDA NALLEY, was born January 5, 1845, in Piqua, Ohio.
They were married January 27, 1858. After their marriage they resided east
of this city about three years, then moved to Round Grove township in White
