Lafayette Morning Journal, August 20, 1906, Lafayette, Indiana
MRS. MARY J. GATES, who was taken to the Home hospital on Saturday, died at that
institution yesterday morning at 8:30 o'clock. Her death was caused by obstruction of
the bowels which resulted from a disease of the liver that had troubled her for a long
time. The remains were taken from the hospital to the family residence, 126 Columbia
street, West Lafayette.
MRS. GATES was 67 years old and her entire life was spent in this county. Her maiden name
was MARY DRISCOL, and she had lived in West Lafayette ever since her marriage. She is
survived by four sons, EDWARD, of Chicago; WILLIAM and MARTIN, who reside in the west, and
PERRY, who lives in West Lafayette. She leaves two brothers, JAMES and ELIAS DRISCOL, and
one sister, MRS. JOHANNA GRAVES.
MRS. GATES was a member of the Baptist church and took a very active part in every form of
church work. She was a woman of noble character, an earnest and consistent Christian, and
was loved and respected by all who knew her. The funeral will be conducted Wednesday
afternoon.
Note: Mary Jane Driscol Gates was married to William Gates, who died in 1873. Both are
buried at Sand Ridge Cemetery, in Wabash Township.
