Silas Frederick Shaffer, named after his grandfather, was the son of George W. Shaffer
and Rhoda Sarah Catherine Nydegger. He was born May 6, 1896 in Clarks Hill, Tippecanoe,
Indiana. He died on Oct 13, 1918 while serving at the US Army, Evacuation Hospital No. 28,
in Camp Sherman, Ohio. The American Legion Post in Clarks Hill was named Shaffer-Schultz
after him and Carl Schultz, the other Clark's Hill boy who died during World War I.
Silas is buried in the Salem Cemetery.
George Shaffer and his brothers were too young to serve during the Civil War. However, I
do know that his older brothers, Charles and Harry Shaffer, harvested the crops for many
farmers in Tippecanoe and Clinton county while those men were away at war.

Hi everyone!
Sorry to start another thread of messages so close to a Surname Shout Out
but with the lists being down the first part of the year it threw my
scheduling off. Hope you don't mind...
With this being the Memorial Day Weekend, I thought it would it be
interesting to post one ancestor we have in our family trees who served in
one of the many wars and battles we fought in US History. Obviously it has
to be an ancestor from this county. :)
Give a brief biography of that person including the unit and war he or she
was in, a POW, injuries, plus the usual genealogical stuff.
Thanks in advance and have a safe weekend!
