Jacob Demerly was my maternal grandfather. My mother's name is Rose and she was born
Feb. 21, 1921, the youngest child. I don't know Rosemary. They lived on 8th street and
Jake's garage and Nash dealership was in West Lafayette just across the river. He was
also an authorized Duesenberg dealer and he sold only one to a man that owned a gas meter
factory in Lafayette. About 1950 the garage burned down from a fire in the paint store
next door so Jake retired and sold his property to Sears Roebuck. His first wife passed in
1953. The farm in Rockfield was not where Jake was from. That farm was purchased by his
son, Norb, in the late 40's. Norb started a body shop after his dad's shop burned
down. The farm is about 750 acres of very high quality with a nice stand of black walnut
trees. Jake was a real outdoorsman and he used to take his mechanics on fly-in fishing and
hunting trips to Canada back before WWII. My mother, Rose, married Phillip Rice in 1949.
He graduated that year !
from Purdue with a degree in engineering. My father traced the Demerlys back to Germany
and even traveled over and met some relatives that didn't immigrate. The farm is
still in the family and Jake's grandson, Michael Demerly still lives there.
