OK, those of you who know me know that I am famous for
my annoying soapbox speeches. Well it's time for
another one.
I just found a family tree on Rootsweb that contains
information that I am seeing for the first time on a
family that I've done lots of research on. I e-mailed
the gentleman who posted it and it bounced back.
(We've all had this happen to us a million times.) Why
did the e-mail bounce back? Because he had used the
e-mail address given to him by his internet provider
and he probably doesn't use that provider anymore. But
there's a really easy way to keep this from happening.
Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc. all offer free e-mail
addresses with huge amounts of storage. No matter how
many times I switch internet providers, I will always
have my gostraka(a)yahoo.com address. If I'm using Juno,
AOL, NetZero, broad band, local, whatever- people can
always reach me at this address. And it doesn't cost
me anything (which of course is my favorite part)!
I highly recommend checking out these e-mail sites and
picking one up for genealogy. I don't recommend
Hotmail but some people love it. Yahoo I have really
liked and Gmail now offers 1 GB of storage. I know
it's an extra step that a lot of people don't feel
like taking when they get on the internet, but trust
me it's worth it!
