CAMPBELL, MARY BIRCH
(Lafayette, Indiana Newspaper Saturday, July 31, 1926)
Mrs Mary Birch Campbell, an old time resident of Battle Ground, died at her
home in Wilmington, Ohio, Friday, according to a telegram received by
William M. Jackson, county clerk, her nephew. By a strange coincidence her
death occurred on the burial day of her late husbands sister, Mrs Elizabeth
R. Jackson, mother of William M. Jackson. Mrs Campbell whose maiden name
was Mary Birch was born and reared in Battle Ground, being a member of a
pioneer family. She was about 80 years old. At one time she was
postmistress at Battle Ground. Many years ago she married Samuel Campbell
of Gallipolis, Ohio, who die eight years ago. The widow moved from
Gallipolis to Wilmington, where she lived with her only daughter, Mrs Marie
Rice. A nephew, John V. Franklin, lives in Tippecanoe Township this county.
CAMPBELL, JENNIE (1844-1919)
Lafayette, Indiana Newspaper Wednesday, July 16, 1919)
New Richmond, July 16, Mrs Jennie Campbell, 73, years old, died at her home
here yesterday following a sudden attack of ptomaine poisoning shortly after
she had eaten dinner. She had suffered a slight paralytic stroke two weeks
ago, but this did not contribute to her death, physicians state. Mrs
Campbell was born in Ohio, September 30, 1844. On January 14, 1875, she
married Elisha C. Campbell, of Attica, and since her marriage she has
resided at New Richmond. She was a member of the Methodist church and had
many fiends here. Mrs Campbell leaves two children, Frank E. and Mrs Nellie
Bell, both of New Richmond. A second son, William K. died in infancy. Her
husband preceded her in death on December 14, 1901, when he was killed in a
runaway at Lafayette. Funeral arrangements have not been completed.
CAMPBELL, ELISHA (1845-1901)
(Lafayette, Indiana Newspaper, December 4, 1901)
New Richmond Cemetery, New Richmond, Indiana
Elisha Campbell, a broom manufacturer whose home was at New Richmond, was
killed at the Second street crossing yesterday morning while he was on his
way to this city. He was accompanied by his son-in-law, William Bell, of
New Richmond, and they were driving in a buggy. The back part of the
vehicle was stocked with brooms, which were being brought here for sale.
The gentleman did not see an approaching switch engine until the horses were
in front of it. The animals were pulled sharply to the right by Mr Bell to
avoid the engine, and they were frightened so badly that they ran away,
starting west on Wabash avenue at a lively gait. Mr Bell jumped from the
vehicle and escaped injury. Mr Campbell tried to follow his son-in -laws
example, and received injuries that caused his death in a few minutes. He
was a large man and landed on the ground on his head. He was picked up
unconscious and was taken to the jail hospital, where Dr Tilson was called
to attend him. The hospital was reached at 11:30 o'clock and the injured
man expired soon after the place was reached. The statement that his skull
was crushed is erroneous. His death was caused by internal injuries.
Mr Bell says that there was no flag-man at the crossing when he approached,
but people who witnessed the accident say that he is mistaken. Mr Bell and
his father-in -law were ridding with the top of the buggy up. And the side
curtains prevented a full few of the track. The body of Mr Campbell was
taken to the Bradshaw undertaking establishment to be prepared for burial,
and was forwarded to New Richmond last evening. The time for the funeral
has not been set. The deceased was 56 years old and leaves a widow and two
children, Mrs William Bell and Frank Campbell. He had served in the civil
war, and was an honest and industrious citizen who enjoyed the confidence
and respect of the people in the community in which he lived. Funeral of
Elisha Campbell who was killed on Wednesday at the Second Street crossing
of the Big Four railroad in jumping from a buggy, will be buried today. The
funeral will be conducted from the Methodist church in New Richmond this
morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. Mr Weston, pastor of the church, will
officiate, and will be assisted by Rev. Charles Jakes of Stockwell. The
interment will be made in the New Richmond Cemetery, and will be under the
auspices of the Masonic fraternity and the Grand Army of the Republic.

Hi All,
Besides working on my family I'm also working on my wife's Campbell
family. I would be ever grateful if someone could help me with some of the
names in the subject box. I have some old newspaper clippings my wife's
grandmother had saved and it was some of the people I listed.
My wife's grandmother was Jennie Campbell born in Gallipolis, Gallia Co.,
Ohio and was married to George Merrill Rice, Sr. who was born in Wilksville,
Vinton Co., Ohio. They had two children: Samuel Birch Rice, Sr. and Mary
Elizabeth Rice, who was my wife's mother. Mary Elizabeth Rice was married
to Henry Lewis Campbell (not related to her grandmother Jennie Campbell.)
Jennie Campbell's parents were Samuel M. Campbell and Mary Birch. Samuel's
first wife was Margaret Eliza Hill.
If any of these names ring a bell please email me.
