How about other names like his mothers maiden name?
Baptism certificate are a good record if you can find the
family church where they were members of. Or finding the family bible.
These were very important before state birth records.
There may be a newspaper mention, rare, but they are there in the 1870s.
Or find the cemetery where the family is buried. Sometimes the only
evidence is the tombstone between census records.
Births were not required to be recorded or deaths in Indiana
until 1882, even then many counties didn't comply until years later.

How do I find a birth notice or certificate of John Cremens. This is the
way the name was spelled in 1860, Crimins 1870. He was born in Lafayette,
Indiana. Also looking for the death of his mother, Mary. I only know she
died in 1863. Thanks for any help. eileen
