The little village of Clark’s Hill, the place of my birth, March 19, 1923, was founded by
a Mr Daniel Clark. He was an emigrant to Indiana in 1845 from South Coventry, Connecticut.
He joined with other emigrants that had already selected this spot in Indiana, to be their
home. One emigrant, William Bryant of Ross County, Ohio, stood out. He rode horseback to
reach the area and then continued on to the state of Iowa, just to return again to the
area. Mr Bryant let everyone know the land they had chosen for their homes, was the finest
in the territory. The land referred to, as the finest in the territory, was located in
Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe county, Indiana. The little village was a very small
community. But, five years after Mr. Clark arrived, a need of a business center was felt,
and Mr Clark, being a broad minded and farsighted gentlemen, made the plans and laid off
the plot for the town. It was surveyed by Mr. Samuel Richards and given the name of
Clarksvil!
le. But, as there was another town by that name in Indiana, he had to rename the town.
The new name was CLARK’S HILL.
