The Lafayette City Directories 1885-1888 and 1891
show William Herriman in business with Frank E Shockey, as wholesale manufacturer of shoes
and boots, located in different directories at 48 S Third Street and at 14 and 16 North
3rd. Wm, May L, and Nellie L are listed at the northeast corner of Perrin Avenue and
Asher; and William and Miss Nellie Herriman are also listed at 203 S Third.
WPA Deaths show Mary A Herriman died Sept 15, 1902 in city of Lafayette,age 53 y
"Past and Present of Tippecanoe County, Indiana" 1909; has a biographical sketch
of Nellie's father William Herriman, Jr. A summary:
He was born Nov 24, 1844, at Salem, Mass, s/o William (born North Ireland) and Mary
(Troy)(born England) Herriman. William learned the shoe business early, and came west in
1865, settling in Lafayette and starting a shoe manufacturing business. Married 22 Dec
1864 to Mary Roach, d/o Martin and Anna Roach of Vermont and natives of Westminster,
Windham County, England. William and Mary had 5 children: Catherine L b 1865, died
infancy; William A, b 19 Jul 1866, died infancy; Mary Josephine, b 19 Aug 1867, died
infancy; Nellie L, b July 6, 1869, married Walter L. Dickerson, August 21, 1895, whose son
William is now thirteen years old; Lillie May, b 14 Sep 1878, married Amos Mitchell, and
has one child, Mary Imogene Mitchell. Mrs. William Herriman died 13 Sep 1902, bur
Springvale Cem. The family also lived in Colorado ca 1870 and returned to Lafayette 1884.
