From what I understand they were supposed to list the
households
as they were the day the census taker
knocked on the door. I always assumed the mortality
lists were there to show what changes may have
occurred in certain households within the previous
year. One thing that I was told at some point that
might explain that is if the family wasn't at home
when the census taker came by he would just ask the
neighbors and they would provide him with information
about that household. Maybe a neighbor gave the info
and didn't know that man had passed away.

Subject: Census Mortality info
Was wondering if someone on the list has knowledge
of a mortality schedule for the 1900 US census.
There is a death date for a distant cousin of Dec
1899 but yet that person is listed as living with a
cousin in 1900.
Were dead people suppose to be listed if they had
died the year prior to 1900?
Since this is one of my most active lists, I was
hoping someone could answer my questions
Thanks, Judy
