1. Re: William's children
I have the same info on the first few children... Lucy; Isabella; Julia - except I have
her husband as Louis F. Raub; William - he later was married to a Maggie when he lived in
Texas (Edith left & moved to St Louis); I don't have Mary Elizabeth; Dora - I only
found her in a Census, where did you find her death date?; Ella - same; Frank - same; I
haven't found any other children & did not know anything about Bertha, Grace or
Jessie. I did know that he had at least 8 children.
Here is a summary of Uncle Frank's letter to my mother in 1979. He was quite elderly
at the time. He is a son to Frank Helem (1870-1933).
Notes from letter from Uncle Frank, Williams grandson, written in 1979: "Grampa
& Grandmaw & Gays I think came from Ohio they settled around West Point. They was
2 or three Gay Famley & 1 Robertson. Robertson taken up 160 acres about 1/2 mi from
Grandvill village (gon) Road from Westpoint at Wabash river 8 children was borned by
Robertson Gays 3. Uncle Santford Gay married Aunt Ellea Dads next to older sister.
Grandpap had 2 boys Frank & William. William went to Waco in 1900. Thay went to
Brick school down on corner of Rd tore down 25 years ago. ...Grandpap moved to Lafayette
close to 17 & Hartford st on pearl river that then ran through town. It is all
timbered over now, they tore the old house down a bout 34 yrs ago."
2. William had lived in Champaign, Illinois in 1860 Census
Wm Robertson, Jr wrote a letter to the Editor, in the letter he says that his father moved
to Lafayette in 1868 from Champaign, Ill. (Newspaper article on Williams death in 1909
says that he came to Lafayette 35 years ago (1874) and has resided here continuously since
that time - it may be that he moved to the West Point/Granville area in 1868 & later
moved to Lafayette).
3. There is a Permelia Robertson that married a Lewis Sears Davis. They had a daughter
Martha Jane (Mattie?) b. 23 Jun 1858, Champaign County, Illinois who married a James
Robertson Yuill.
Mr & Mrs Louis (newspaper spelling) Davis attended the 1898 Robertson family reunion.
Mattie Youill is also listed.
There is also a Yuill in the 1919 reunion.
I cannot take all the credit for the newspaper clippings. Others have been generous in
sharing their research. I used these clues along with a newspaper clipping that hinted of
a Custer connection. I know that I may be wrong but feel that Mathew & Sarah are the
parents we are looking for. Mathew & Sarah list three children in the Census' who
are Jesse, Permelia & Mathew.
Thanx, Erica.
