Lafayette, Indiana, Weekly Courier (Tippecanoe County)
November 7, 1899
Rev. Robert Baker
The death of Rev. Robert Baker occurred at Dayton[, Indiana] last Saturday,
after an illness of five days. He was born in Butler county, Ohio, June 5,
1821, and came to this county in 1827, his father building the first log
house east of the Wild Cat creek, in Sheffield township. When he was 17
years of age young Baker was given license to preach in the United Brethren
church. For over half a century he made Dayton his home and was one of the
town's most highly respected men. He was married twice, first to Miss
Elizabeth Popjoy [sic], of Lexington, Ill.; she dying in 1855. His second
wife was Mary Jane Fisher, who died in 1861. He leaves three children,
Margaret, Alvin and Wilbert, with one niece, Mary Jane Slevin, who, with
Margaret Baker, has kept house for him since 1861, to mourn his removal. The
funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from his late
residence at Dayton.
NOTE: Popjoy is usually spelled Popejoy.
