OBITUARY
Mrs. Rosannah Powell was born April 3, 1839, in Tippecanoe County, Indiana. She with her
husband crossed the plains to eastern Oregon and settled near Baker City in 1874, where
the family resided until the fall of 1886, when they came to Ashland, where they have
since lived, being old residents. The deceased lived to the age of 78 years, 4 months,
and 14 days. The husband, William Powell, who was so well known here, died August 30,
1913, not quite four years ago. So they both passed away in the month of August.
They are survived by a family of six children, all but one of whom were at her bedside
during her illness and death. They are John F. Powell, the oldest, of Baker County; D.S.
Powell, Albert E. Powell and Thaddeus L. Powell, all of Ashland; Mrs. R.M. Murray of
Helena, Mont.; and Mrs. William Flackus of Ashland.
The funeral services were held at the family residence, 462 A street, at 2 o'clock
Sunday, August 19, Rev. W.T. Van Scoy conducting the services. The interment was in the
family lot in Ashland cemetery beside that of her late husband. The pallbearers were Fred
Patton, Wilmer Poley, Walter Frulan, James Hendrix, William Patton and Fred Ahlstrom.
Miss Jean Anderson sang two beautiful solos at the service. The floral pieces were
elaborate and most beautiful, and showed the high esteem in which Mrs. Powell was held by
her neighbors and many friends. There was a large attendance at the funeral. Another
good mother is numbered with those on the other shore. God will bless the memory of her
to good to all.
(I found a marriage for a William Powell to Rosanna Burns, November 1, 1861, in Tippecanoe
County, Indiana, at
