Interesting article. I wonder how it all came out.
I am not related and have no other information on the family.

MR. RAY'S UNEXPECTED REAPPEARANCE
LAFAYETTE, Ind., Jan. 29, -- JOHN RAY, a farmer of this vicinity, in the year 1867 (now
seventeen years ago) took a lot of cattle to Chicago, which he sold, and was never heard
of afterward. It was supposed he had been killed for his money, and his body thrown in
the lake. Years rolled on, and no tidings of him coming, he was given up for dead. His
estate, which was considerable, was settled, and three entries stand upon the records of
Tippecanoe County, declaring John Ray dead, his wife a widow, and his debts paid by order
of court out of his property.
A day or two ago he put in an appearance. He had spent about seventeen years of his life
in Texas and New Mexico. His old farm occupied by a strange man, who holds clear
title-deed for it.
His wife is still living and married, and his children, some of whom he left as infants,
are now grown to manhood and womanhood. The lawyers are endeavoring to ascertain the
exact legal status of John Ray.
