I don't know about the fire insurance maps, but if you can get a hold of the 1878
atlas, look at the maps in the front of the streets of Lafayette. I had forgotten about
these.
The name OAKLAND is printed across the blocks paralleling Grove street, just off the area
I've known as Five-Points (where Columbia, Main, and 16th streets cross). The Swedish
church is pictured and labeled, on Grove St. The part of Main street running from Five
Points to Oakland School is labeled Oakland Avenue. In the downtown area below the hill it
is Main Street. I'm not sure exactly where the dividing point is. Oakland School is
shown on the map. I can't speak for the exact relationship between the blocks labeled
Oakland and the School, since they are some distance apart, and only connected by Oakland
Avenue, but there must be a story there.
There is a little shopping area at Five-Points. I'm not sure when the name was
attached to the intersection and the surrounding area.
When I get a chance, I'll look up a little newspaper article I have about Oakland and
Dayton. The Oakland boys came to Dayton for a ball game, if I remember correctly.
Susan
