DAYTON PYTHIANS TO OBSERVE 31ST BIRTHDAY, MAR. 5

Dayton, Ind., March 4On March 5, Sheffield lodge No. 414, Knights of
Pythias will observe its thirty-first anniversary, being organized March 5,
1895. George W. Ricks of Lafayette was Deputy Grand Chancellor in charge of
the installation when Sheffield Lodge was ushered into existence with 27
charter members as follows: Edward A. Sims, Lawrence Nicely, Cyrus D.
Shepherdson, Carl H. Loser, Marvin V. Slayback, Marvin Paden, John R.
Gladden, Thomas A. Hollingsworth, Alton D. Paden, Kosta Slayback, Riley P.
Ilgenfritz, Alvin C. Baker, Mannon A. Delong, John D. Biery, William C.
Schultz, J. Clifford Staley, Sylvanus P. Lentz, Edward H. Paul, Raymond R.
Robinson, James A. Shepherdson, William C. Gladden, Thomas M. Powell,
William H. Wakeland, Perry D. Brand, Alvin J. Coulter, and Melvin Slayback.
Of this number 11 have answered the final summons. They are Edward A. Sims,
Lawrence Nicely, Cyrus D. Shepherdson, Carl H. Loser, Marlon Paden, Kosta
Slayback, John D. Biery, William C. Schultz, James A. Shepherdson, Wm. H.
Wakeland, and Wm. C. Gladden. Sheffield Lodge was instituted with only 27
members in the hall above the Sims hotel and continued to meet there until
able to build its own hall. It has grown slowly but surely and there is now
a membership of 111 [?] in good standing as well as a Pythian Sister lodge
named Good Cheer Temple No. 181. No. 414 meets on each Thursday night and
No. 181 on each Monday night. All Knights and Sisters are most welcome to
visit each lodge on the meeting night.
E. E. Baker, who has been confined to his home for the past month by
illness, is improving slowly.
Alvin Warwick is getting along very nicely at present after suffering a
relapse a few weeks ago.
Miss Gladys Benham will go to Indianapolis Monday, to take up the studying
for a nurse. The Victory class in the Presbyterian church made her costumes
The play given by the Methodist brotherhood was largely attended and greatly
enjoyed by all present.
J. T. Higgins, Melba House and Flossie Hershey were weekend visitors in
Indianapolis.
LODGE SUPPERS
The Knights of Pythias held their annual supper Friday night on the
anniversary of the founding of the order; 215 took supper after which there
was a good program and dancing.
The I.O.O.F. lodge held its annual supper February 26; about 120 had super
and enjoyed the program and social hour.
Mrs. William Powell was a Dayton visitor recently.
William Adams is having a large cistern built and the water piped into his
barber shop.
